Cover

Cover: shown is a female goldfish (Carassius auratus) in front of a carp/goldfish cDNA microarray developed in the AURATUS Goldfish Genomics project (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/query/acc.cgi?acc=GPL3735). This platform was used to analyze the hypothalamic transcriptome in female goldfish injected with the antidepressant fluoxetine. Traces of this pharmaceutical have recently been detected in the aquatic environment. The study revealed effects on the reproductive axis in goldfish, in particular disruption of circulating estrogen. Analysis of the hypothalamic transcriptome identified the reproductive neuropeptide isotocin as being downregulated in the hypothalamus. Additional studies revealed that isotocin stimulates circulating estradiol, providing a potential mechanism for the observed decrease in estradiol. For details see Mennigen JA, Martyniuk CJ, Crump K, Xiong H, Zhao E, Popesku J, Anisman H, Cossins AR, Xia X, Trudeau VL. Effects of fluoxetine on the reproductive axis of female goldfish (Carassius auratus). Physiol Genomics 35: 273-282, 2008 (first published September 2, 2008) doi:10.1152/physiolgenomics.90263.2008.
