Cover

Cover: Shown is the tentative tertiary structure of the extracellular glycine-binding S1S2 segment of crucian carp NR1 subunit, which is a part of the NMDA glutamatergic neurotransmitter receptor. The NMDA receptor promotes anoxic brain damage, and since the crucian carp is one of the most anoxia-tolerant vertebrates there is, it is possible that NMDA receptor function is modified in the animal. Crystal structure for rat NR1 S1S2 was used as template. Red side-chains/letters indicate differences in amino acid composition between crucian carp and rat. The orange regions indicate the parts of S1S2 that leaves/enters the cell membrane. The green region indicates loop 1 of the S1S2 fragment, where a novel splice cassette (including an N-glycosylation site that is highlighted by the red box) was found in some crucian carp NR1. For details, see Ellefsen S, Sandvik GK, Larsen HK, Stensløkken K-O, Hov DA, Kristensen TA, and Nilsson GE. Expression of genes involved in excitatory neurotransmission in anoxic crucian carp (Carassius carassius) brain. Physiol Genomics 35: 5–17, 2008 (first published July 1, 2008; doi:10.1152/physiolgenomics.90221.2008).
