Alpha-Amylase-1 is not included because it was listed as being overexpressed in older muscle in the online tables but was listed as being underexpressed in older muscle in the paper of Lee et al. (15).

2This UniGene cluster is the best match for both AA114576, which was expressed at an increased level in old murine muscle, and U73744, which was expressed at a reduced level in old murine muscle.

4These are the alpha-2 and alpha-1 human globin genes, which have the same coding sequence but different 3'UTR sequences.

5The published mRNA sequences do not have a SAGE tag (no CATG); this tag was found in several ESTs in this UniGene cluster.

6Best match is a mitochondrial gene, ATP synthase 6/8. UniGene does not have clusters for mitochondrial genes. Although there are several non-mitochondrial human ESTs matching this mouse ORF, there was concern about contamination by mouse cDNA.

7Used gene name rather than ORF to identify homologous human gene because of poor homology between this ORF and human mRNA/EST sequences in GenBank.

8Entrez found no entry for L2450. Too many genes matched "DNA binding protein" to find human homolog by gene name.

9This ORF is also given in a separate row in the online table of Lee et al., with the gene name COUP-TFI. Both genes are listed as being about 3-fold more abundant in young muscle.

11The tag for human perinatal myosin is given here even though the BLAST scores for other isoforms are higher. As reported elsewhere (29), older muscle had less type 2a myosin heavy chain than young, but the amount of type 1 was not affected by aging. The Affymetrix data for this transcript do not appear to be meaningful because of the very high levels of other myosin isoforms, which cause very high nonspecific hybridization and a negative score for abundance even in the sample with higher abundance.

12Decisions were concordance (Con) between mice and men in the effect of age on expression of the gene, discordance (Dis) between mice and men in the effect of age on expression of the gene, or no decision (ND) because of insufficient data. S indicates decision based on SAGE, A indicates decision based on array, SA indicates decision based on both methods, S≠A indicates conflict between SAGE and array results.
